Description of post

The Design group of the Ghent University-imec IDLab research group is currently looking for several new PhD and post-doc researchers. The Design team is internationally recognized as a leading research group on high-speed and high-frequency integrated circuits for next-generation communications systems. At this moment, the Design group is for example active in twelve European projects, one ESA project and in direct research contracts with world-leading industry partners. These collaborations form the perfect basis for high-level and industry-relevant research in an environment with expert peers and top-notch test and measurement equipment. The main research lines focus on wired (fiber-optic, radio-over-fiber), wireless (5G, mmWave) and instrumentation for which custom CMOS or SiGe BiCMOS chips are developed and integrated in system demonstrators.

To extend our team, this vacancy is looking for a strong research profile on microwave and quantum integrated circuits/systems for space applications.

The position is based on an EU Marie Curie project MWP4SPACE (Microwave Photonics Technologies for Space Communication and Sensing Applications), which offers 15 PhD positions. The MWP4SPACE Doctoral Network will train the next generation of specialists in integrated microwave electronic/photonic devices and systems in the framework of satellite and space applications. They will gain skills to integrate compact radio frequency (RF) circuits, and cutting-edge knowledge of photonic integrated circuit (PIC) design, fabrication, packaging, validation, and qualification, both at the device and system levels.

Our offer

The selected candidates will be employed with a fulltime contract. The salary follows the Marie Curie-Skłodowska DN funding Scheme that offers a highly completive salary. On top of the regular compensation, an extra allowance will be available to cover mobility expenses. The living allowance will be subject to a country correction coefficient, according to the hosting country. Applicants may also be eligible for a family allowance. Therefore, the exact gross salary will be confirmed upon appointment.

Typical research projects in the Design group involve multiple researchers with different specialties working as a team. Hence, a good team spirit, a good knowledge of English and effective communication skills (such as presenting and reporting) are of major importance for a successful collaboration.

Your profile

  • You need to hold (or will obtain in near future) a relevant master’s degree e.g., Master of Science in Electrical Engineering or Electronics Engineering or Photonics
  • Researchers must have not been awarded a doctoral degree.
  • Researchers may not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of their host organisation for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the recruitment date.
  • Additional experience considered as a plus:
    • Work experience (academic or industrial) or publications
    • Experimental characterization of high-speed, high-frequency components and (sub-) systems
    • Nanophotonics or quantum communication systems
  • Your English is fluent, both speaking and writing
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team
  • Ability to tackle complex problems
